Iran, FAO sign MOU to fight malnutrition, hunger across world
Iran and UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation in fighting malnutrition and hunger across the world.
The MOU was signed by Iran's Minister of Agriculture Mahmoud Hojjati and Director General of FAO José Graziano da Silva, Iranian media reported on Tuesday.
According to the agreement, the Islamic Republic will work with FAO to transfer its scientific experiences in the field of increasing productivity of production resources to developing countries.
Explaining on the MOU, Hojjati told reporters that it is part of the South-South cooperation in agriculture sector, which will improve collaboration between Iran and FAO in this field.
He added that the two sides will cooperate in the training and empowerment of agricultural producers in the Middle East and the member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
“Based on the memorandum, FAO will dispatch its experts to Iran,” to help Iranian experts in activities related to food production and fighting hunger, the Iranian minister said.
Da Silva, for his part, announced his readiness to pay a visit to Iran and tour the country’s scientific and research centers active in the field of agriculture.
Earlier on Sunday, Da Silva awarded Iran's agriculture minister with FAO’s diploma of honor through a ceremony attended by agriculture ministers and representatives of 197 member states of the organization.
He also lauded Iran's efforts aimed to reduce the number of people suffering from malnutrition to below 5 percent of the population.
According to figures released by FAO, 72 out of 192 world countries have been successful in reducing by half the number of people affected by malnutrition, thus realizing the Millennium Goals set by the United Nations in this sector.
