New video shows US police officers beating mentally-ill man

Salinas police engaged in a violent struggle with a suspect, firing a Taser at him and striking him multiple times with batons.

A new video has emerged showing disturbing images of US police officers beating a mentally-ill man with batons in Salinas, California amid other instances of police brutality in other US states.

The video captured by a passenger shows Salinas police firing a Taser at the victim, repeatedly striking him with batons and then handcuffed him on Friday.

Police arrived at the scene of a confrontation in North Main Street after receiving a report that a man was trying to throw his mother into traffic.

28-year-old Jose Velasco was slamming the woman into the northbound lane where traffic was moving along. The woman called the police reporting that his son was being violent.

Police separated Velasco from his mom, but he fought back which resulted in the brutal reaction by police.

Although officers employed a Taser on the man, he did not seem to be affected, so they resorted to batons in order to control him.

He was then taken to a hospital and sedated at Natividad Medical Center. Police placed him under arrest for probation violations and other felonies in Monterey County Jail.

Salinas Police Chief Kelly McMillin described the man in the video as "a violent man assaulting his own mother."

"The video alone is horrific and inflammatory," McMillin said. "Anybody who looks at that video without context would have concerns, because it looks terrible."

Police brutality in the US is rife and has become a major concern among civil rights groups.

In another video released last week, police were shown handcuffing and physically holding down a black teenage girl at a pool party in McKinney, Texas.

A white police officer is seen shouting and ordering some black teens to lie on the ground while telling others to disperse in a neighborhood pool on Friday.

Following the release of the video, hundreds of people took to the streets in Texas on Monday to protest the violent actions of the white police officer against black group of teens at the pool party.

Demonstrators rallied outside a McKinney elementary school. Some gathered in the Dallas suburb, holding signs that read “My skin color is not a crime,” and, “Don’t tread on our kids.”
