The Pentagon has announced that the US and its European allies are conducting military drills in the Baltic region “to ensure regional security.”

Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren said on Monday 2,000 American troops and 3,600 troops from other nations will participate in the Baltic Operations exercise (Baltops).

The war games take place in Poland, Sweden, Germany and the Baltic Sea through June 20, he added.

The UK, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Turkey are the countries that are involved in the massive exercise.

The drills also include about 49 ships, 61 aircraft and one submarine.

The Baltic Operations come while US President Barack Obama, who is in Germany, called on leaders of the G7 industrial nations to stand up against “Russian aggression” in Ukraine.

On the sidelines of the summit on Monday, Obama huddled with European leaders in an effort to convince them to take a tougher line against Russia.

Washington and its allies have imposed sanctions against Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine, accusing the country of supporting pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. The Kremlin denies the allegations.

NBC News reported on Sunday 300 US forces are located in Ukraine to train the country’s troops on Russia's doorsteps.

The American paratroopers are working with over 700 Ukrainian soldiers in three rotations during the six-month mission that started in April.
