Scott Walker: No need for US combat forces in Iraq

Scott Walker says that Iraq does not need any American combat forces.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) has said that Iraq does not need any American combat forces to fight the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group.

Walker made the remarks on ABC News’s “This Week,” aired Sunday when asked whether he would want to dispatch US troops “to Iraq now if he were commander in chief.”

“I believe right now we have a capacity to reclaim Iraq with the Iraqi forces that are there as long as we unleash the power that is already there of the American armed forces”.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has recently said that Washington should send 10,000 US ground troops to Iraq to combat the ISIL terrorists in Iraq and Syria.

Also on May 21, retired Army officers and military experts, who engineered the 2007 “surge” in Iraq, called for a return of US combat troops to the country.

The US should deploy at least 20,000 troops to assist Iraqi and Kurdish forces on the ground, conservative military experts told the Senate Armed Services Committee in May.

However, Walker said the US should “reengage” the power of the US military forces present in Iraq in order to empower allied forces that can reclaim territory.

He also said the strategy must be implemented in such a way that does not cause the ISIL terrorists to move toward Syria.

When asked if he supports Graham’s view on sending more troops to Iraq, Walker first said, “I think we shouldn't rule anything out,” but later he added that he would not “rule out boots on the ground.”

He also said that the US should keep secret “how far we're willing to go”.

President Barack Obama has insisted that Washington is not losing the war against the ISIL in Iraq and Syria, despite the recent loss of key territories in both countries.
