A militant suspected of working with the Takfiri ISIL terrorist group has been killed by police in the volatile region of Dagestan, Russia’s anti-terrorism committee says.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said on Saturday that the individual, identified as Suleiman Zainalobinov, was killed before dawn.

He opened fire after police stopped his car, triggering an exchange of fire that ended in his death.

The incident comes against the backdrop of Friday reports that a university student in Moscow, who was purportedly planning to join the ranks of ISIL, was detained on the Turkish-Syrian border region.

The Takfiri ISIL terrorists, many of whom were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 in an attempt to destabilize the Syrian government, now control parts of Syria and neighboring Iraq. They have been engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on May 29 warned that foreign militants who have joined ISIL in Iraq and Syria are posing serious threats to the world peace and security.

“I remain concerned that recent events, particularly in Iraq and Syria, which have seen the advance of Da’esh (ISIL) and other groups with the growing support of [foreign terrorists], demonstrate that this is an increasing threat to international peace and security that requires even more concerted action by the international community,” Ban said while briefing the UN Security Council.

The UN has recently said that 25,000 terrorists from more than 100 countries have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join terrorist groups such as ISIL and the al-Qaeda-affiliate al-Nusra Front.
