Long Island shooting leaves three people dead, one injured

Three people are fatally shot and one is in critical condition following a shooting on a Long Island street in New York City, police say.

According to the police, the shooting occurred on Wednesday night, when a gunman walked up to a parked car and fired 16 rounds before fleeing the scene.

William Madrey, 25, Stephanie Almadina Rivera, 23, and Ciara Smith, 23, were fatally shot by the perpetrator and pronounced dead at the scene.

Another woman who was standing next to the car at the time of the shooting was also hit, but she was expected to survive after receiving medical care at a nearby hospital.

An investigation into the shooting was underway but no arrests were made.

According to Gun Violence Archive, more than 20,000 gun-related incidents have taken place in the United States since the beginning of 2015, resulting in some 5,000 homicides.
