Germany angry over UK’s potential exit from EU

Tension mounting over UK's potential exit from EU

Former German Foreign Minister has warned the UK that Angela Merkel will not prioritize its potential exit from the EU and give in to demands on Britain’s relationship with the bloc.

Joshka Fischer is widely regarded as one of the key players on the European foreign policy and believes that the UK is playing a dangerous game at the moment regarding their future with the EU.

Fischer believes that Merkel has bigger priorities to sort out aside from the UK’s potential exit from the EU. He said, "Don't lose yourself in wishful thinking. Angela Merkel will do nothing which will endanger the basic principles of the common market, of the EU.

“She has a much bigger problem to address - how to find a compromise in the currency union with Greece. That's her priority number one now…what will the UK be without the EU? Go to Washington, ask them. The answer is very clear, very negative."

Anti-immigrant party UKIP and the right wing elements of the Tory party have whipped up much of the anti-EU feeling in Britain. They argue that immigration needs to be taken under control, that too many powers are given to Brussels and that Britain has lost its sovereignty as a nation. During the election campaign, UKIP leader Nigel Farage repeatedly chose to focus on countries like Romania when discussing immigration.

EU leaders want UK to stay in 28-member bloc

But there are those, most likely in a majority, that believe it is far wiser to remain within the EU and that the economy would be severely hampered if Britain chose to leave. Prime Minister David Cameron is trying to convince the British people that he is the man to change the UK’s deal with the EU.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has said it is her “clear view” that the UK should remain within the EU. She said "We would like to be a part of the process that is going on in Great Britain at the moment and we would like to be a constructive partner in this process."
