US can no longer continue Russia sanctions due to reliance on firms: Journalist

Zolotarev believes that the US can no longer continue its self-imposed sanctions against Russia.

Russian journalist Dmitry Zolotarev believes that Washington can no longer continue its self-imposed sanctions against Moscow due to its economic reliance on Russian companies.

He made the comments after The New York Times reported on Wednesday that the US military urged Congress to call off legislation that banned the purchase of Russian rocket engines for launching military and intelligence satellites into space.

The Obama administration imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia after accusing the country of supporting pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, an allegation denied by the Kremlin.

A bill was also passed five months ago that forced the Pentagon not to buy the RD-180 rocket engines from Russia.

The US military says it needs the engines for the next several years.

“The United States will have to look into Russian corporations. The United States will have to look into Russian engines,” Zolotarev said in an interview with Press TV on Thursday.

“We cannot just consider one country to develop everything to explore space. It was always about cooperation. It was always about combining efforts between countries,” he added.

“The United States is just using the Ukraine crisis as a pretext to stop buying Russian engines,” Zolotarev said.

Critics in Washington are angry about the country’s reliance on Russian rocket engines.

Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee John McCain criticized the Air Force for wasting a year “doing very little to end our reliance on Russian rocket engines.”

McCain said that the producer of the rockets has close relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and it stood to make $300 million from sales to the US.
