Police in the US state of Wisconsin have concluded that white Officer Matt Kenny was justified in using deadly force in the March shooting death of unarmed black teenager.

Kenny, 45, shot 19-year-old Tony Robinson in Madison, Wisconsin, on April 6. He died at a hospital. Madison's police Chief Mike Koval acknowledged that the teenager was unarmed.

On Wednesday, the Madison police department released a summary of its finding that Kenny did not violate its deadly force policies in the fatal shooting of Robinson.

The findings come three weeks after the district attorney declined to file charges against Kenny.

His acquittal last month sparked protests across Wisconsin.

Protesters march on May 12 after hearing the officer who shot Tony Robinson would not be charged.

The exoneration of the officer, who had been on paid leave since the shooting, clears the way for him to return to the police service.

“He’s looking forward to working, to getting back and doing the job he loves,” said Kenny’s attorney Jim Palmer.

Kenny also killed another unarmed person in 2007, but he was cleared of criminal charges in that case as well.

The shooting death of Robinson has drawn comparisons to the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, another unarmed black, in Ferguson, Missouri, last year.

"My son has never been a violent person. And to die in such a violent, violent way, it baffles me," said Andrea Irwin, Robinson's mother.

The fatal shooting comes at a time that US police are under harsh criticism for using brutal tactics against people of color and minorities.

The killing of several unarmed black men by white police officers in recent months and decisions by grand juries not to indict the officers triggered large-scale protests across the United States.
