Dozens of Pakistani human rights activists have staged a rally in support of the persecuted Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar.

The Wednesday rally was held in the eastern city of Lahore, where demonstrators carried placards and chanted slogans in support of the oppressed Muslims in Myanmar.

The rights activists urged the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar to take stronger action to prevent the ongoing persecution of 1.3 million Rohingyas living in the western Myanmar state of Rakhine.

In a separate development, Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of Afghan Parliament, has also urged the Kabul government to raise its voice and use diplomatic channels to halt the violence against the Rohingya Muslims.

The developments come after a fresh wave of violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar's western Rakhine state has triggered a bigger influx of refugees into neighboring countries.

Rohingyas in Myanmar face daily discrimination including controls on their movements, family size and access to jobs.

The discriminatory policies by Myanmar authorities have forced tens of thousands to flee overseas - usually to Malaysia and Indonesia.

In recent years, a large number of Rohingyas have been killed and thousands displaced in attacks by extremist Buddhists.

Authorities in Myanmar refuse to recognize the Rohingya Muslim community as citizens and insist they are “illegal” immigrants, even though they have lived in the southeast Asian country for centuries.
