Iran has offered condolences to the Chinese government and nation over the sinking of a cruise ship on the Yangtze River in China's Hubei province.

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham also sympathized, on behalf of the Iranian government and nation, with China, especially with the families of the victims.

A Chinese tourist boat carrying 458 people capsized late Monday on the Yangtze river in central China.

According to state media, just 14 people have been rescued from the Dongfangzhixing or "Eastern Star “ship.

Bodies of 18 passengers have been recovered so far while hundreds of mostly elderly people are still missing and possibly trapped within the ship.

The ship was travelling along a tourist route from the eastern city of Nanjing to the southwestern city of Chongqing when it capsized.

According to Chinese Transport Minister Yang Chuantang, more than 4,000 people and 110 vessels have taken part in the search and rescue operation.

The captain and the chief engineer of the ship, who were among the few to be rescued, have been arrested.
