‘Islam growing fast in UK as Church of England wanes’

UK

A new study shows Islam is the fastest growing religion in the UK as Church of England is losing its followers.

According to the NatCen’s British Social Attitudes Survey, the Church of England is on the verge of extinction as it has lost some two million followers in the past two years.

The number of people in the UK who describe their beliefs as Anglican dropped from 21% to 17% between 2012 and 2014- a loss of around 1.7 million followers. The number of Anglicans in Britain is now said to be around 8.6 million.

This is while the number of Muslims in Britain grew by close to a million over the same period, making it the fastest growing religion in the UK. 4.7% of Britons now describe themselves as Muslim, amounting to 2.4 million, the Independent reported.

The survey also found that the most common response was having no religion. 49% of people described themselves as having no religion at all.

Now Massoud Shadjareh with the Islamic Human Rights Commission in London says statistics show that despite Islamophobia and stereotyping of it “Islam is the fastest-growing religion right across the world.”

“Many people identify with Islam because Islam actually holds on to its moral and political and economical issues.”

Shadjareh further described Islam as the religion that “encompasses the whole aspects of” people’s lives.

The Church of England has been in decline for the last 30 years and the past decade saw the acceleration of this trend. The number of Anglicans in Britain used to be 40% in 1983.
