Egypt has begun tearing down the headquarters of the once-dominant party of former dictator, Hosni Mubarak.

The headquarters of the National Democratic Party (NDP), located on the Nile coast in central Cairo, was torched during a popular uprising in 2011.

Demolition workers on Sunday began destroying the the four-story building with cranes, bulldozers, and other equipment.

An adjacent 14-story tower, which used to house offices of state-run organisations, was also razed.

Cairo gave the nod to demolitions last month. Both buildings are located near Tahrir Square, the epicenter of anti-Mubarak revolution four years ago.

The NDP party that was headed by Mubarak himself for three decades was dissolved in 2011 after the victory of the revolution.

Last year, a court in Egypt ruled that the party of the toppled dictator will be allowed to run for the country’s future general elections.

Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since the country’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, was ousted on July 3, 2013.

Morsi was toppled in a military coup led by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt’s current president and the then army commander.

Hundreds of Morsi’s supporters have been handed down the death penalty or jail terms often after speedy mass trials.
