First Iran ship docks at Oman’s Sohar port

The first Iranian ship on Saturday arrived in Oman’s Sohar port.

The first Iranian ship on Saturday arrived in Oman’s Sohar port thus officially making a new shipping line between the two countries operational.

Iran’s media reported that a container with a capacity of 96 TEUs or twenty-foot equivalent units carrying Iranian exportable goods had docked at Sohar port. The ship – Genaveh 12 – had started operating in the new Iran-Oman shipping line on May 14.

Iran and Oman in April signed an agreement to establish the new route during the visit to Tehran by a large Omani business delegation.

The route will be used for the transit of agricultural products and perishable goods between the two countries.

Three vessels, including two container ships and a bulk carrier, will travel between Shahid Rajaee and Sohar every 15 days in the initial phase.  Officials have already said the trip intervals could increase to once every week if Iranian businesses welcome this scheme.

The new shipping line is expected to make Oman as a hub for re-export of Iranian goods in the region.

In the past, traders had to charter ships to export their goods to Iran or Oman.
