News in Brief

1. Saudi warplanes have carried out several airstrikes on the town of Sahar in northern Sa’ada province. There is still no report on possible casualties. Earlier, they bombed a school and an air base in the same province. The Saudi onslaught on Yemen has left over four-thousand people dead since March 26.

2. Yemen’s ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh has accused Saudi Arabia of trying to bribe him with millions of dollars into standing up against Houthis. Saleh blamed the Saudi assaults against him on his refusal to comply with Riyadh’s demands. He also said Saudi Arabia is seeking sectarian sedition in Yemen.

3. Amnesty International has urged Riyadh to take effective measures to protect minority Shia Muslims. The appeal comes in the wake of the ISIL terror attack on a mosque in Dammam which killed several worshippers. Shia protesters in the Qatif region and Dammam held rallies to condemn the bombing.

4. The UN Security Council has urged all countries to do more to check the flow of foreign militants into Syria and Iraq. The high body called for more measures and improved intelligence sharing among world nations. 25,000 people from over 100 countries have travelled to the region to join terrorist groups.

5. An anti-Islam group has staged a rally in front of a big mosque in the US city of Phoenix in Arizona. A bigger counter-rally was held by supporters of the mosque. The mosque officials have called on worshippers to attend prayer services despite threats.

6. Spain has agreed to the establishment of a permanent US military base in the country. As part of a deal, the US army will be allowed to station up to three-thousand troops at the base in the southern province of Seville. The two sides will formalize the agreement Monday.

7. Belgium and the Netherlands are probing claims that Germany has helped the US, spy on Berlin's closest allies in Europe for at least a decade. Two parliamentary inquiries are also underway in Germany. German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she will testify before the inquiries.

8. Demonstrators protesting Israel's settlements and separation wall in the West Bank have come under attack from Israeli forces. The Israeli troops used rubber-coated bullets, water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters in the villages of Bil’in and Kfar Qaddum.
