Arizona Muslim group warns about anti-Islam rally
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says a planned demonstration against Islam in Arizona shows how people in the United States are against the religion.
A group of people are expected to gather outside of a Phoenix mosque on Friday to protest the recent shooting at a contest for cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in Texas.
President of the council's Phoenix chapter Imraan Siddiqi called on Muslims to stay away from the mosque to avoid conflict.
“I would not go and talk to these people,” he said. “This is not a forum for dialogue.”
"Don’t mistake that, they’re not saying they want to rid America of radical Islam, they are saying they want to rid America of Islam," Siddiqi said.
Former Marine Jon Ritzheimer organized the anti-Islam rally.
Earlier this month, two gunmen opened fire outside the Curtis Culwell Center where an anti-Islamic group, American Freedom Defense Initiative, was staging a contest that would award $10,000 for the top depiction of the Prophet.
A security guard was shot in the lower leg during the shooting. The two gunmen, identified as Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi of Phoenix, were shot and killed.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the attack.
Police stepped up security near the mosque after the participants were encouraged to come armed "just in case our First Amendment comes under much anticipated attack."
