Germany’s Foreign Ministry says a German aid worker kidnapped in Afghanistan more than a month ago has been freed.

“Foreign Minister [Frank-Walter] Steinmeier is relieved that a German man who was abducted in mid-April has been free since last night,” a ministry spokeswoman told reporters on Friday.

The spokeswoman added that the freed aid worker, who was not identified by name, is currently “in the custody of the German consulate” in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, in northern Afghanistan.

She declined to provide further details on the case, but said a crisis team had worked to secure the German national’s release.

Meanwhile, Sawar Husseini, a spokesman for the police chief of Afghanistan’s northern province of Kunduz, said the German citizen was rescued following an operation involving a special unit of the Afghan National Police (ANP) forces in Chardara district during the early hours of Friday.

The man, who was serving with the German Agency for International Development, was kidnapped by gunmen while he was traveling between Kunduz and Balkh provinces in April, Husseini added.

The police spokesman said no suspect has been arrested in connection with the case.
