Baltic states mulling joint air defense system amid tensions with Russia

Russia

Baltic States are mulling a joint air defense system amid regional tensions with Russia.

The defense minister of Lithuania says the possibility of deploying a medium-range defense system is being analyzed by the three states. He made the announcement after talks with his counterparts from Estonia, Latvia and Ukraine. The skies over the three Baltic States have been guarded by NATO since 2004 when they joined the military alliance. They have been on high alert since Russia reintegrated the Crimean Peninsula in 2014. NATO and Russia have been increasingly flexing their military muscles amid tensions over the crisis in eastern Ukraine. The two sides accuse each other of destabilizing the country.
