US woman, boy found shot to death in Baltimore

Police on the scene of double homicide on Upmanor Road May 28, 2015.

A woman and a boy have been found shot to death in southwest Baltimore, Maryland, authorities say.

The 31-year-old woman and the boy, who was about 8, were shot in the head Thursday and pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers were responding to a shooting on Upmanor Road in the Uplands neighborhood at 8:19 a.m. to find the two victims dead.

Police have not released the victims' names and provided no information on their relationship.

The fatal shooting brought the total number of city homicides in May to 38, which is the highest monthly total since 1996.

So far this year, there have been 111 cases of homicides in Baltimore.

There has been a surge in gun violence in Baltimore and a marked decrease in arrests since the death of Freddie Gray on April 21, who died from spinal injuries while in police custody.

This prompted the residents around the city to take new measures in order to increase safety.

Antoinette Perrine, a resident in the Harlem Park neighborhood of West Baltimore, lost his brother in a shooting on a basketball court near her home three weeks ago. She then barricaded her front door and had iron bars installed outside her home’s windows.

"I'm afraid to go outside." she said. "It's so bad, people are afraid to let their kids outside. People wake up with shots through their windows. Police used to sit on every corner, on the top of the block. These days? They're nowhere."

Gun-related casualties have become a “public health crisis” in the US, according to a study published in February by eight US medical associations.

Over 11,000 people are murdered with a firearm each year in the United States, and more than 20,000 others commit suicide using one.

9,366 people have been injured by gun violence in America since 1 January 2015, up from 7,145 last year, the Gun Violence Archive shows.
