Sevilla beats Dnipro 3-2, wins Europa League for record 4th time

Sevilla soccer team players celebrate after lifting the Europa League trophy for a record 4th time in Warsaw, May 27.

Spain’s Sevilla soccer team has won the UEFA Europa League for a record 4th time after beating Ukraine’s Dnipro 3-2 in the final.

The Ukrainians, whom some had branded as underdogs in the Wednesday final, performed better than expected at the Warsaw National Stadium in Poland and led by 1 goal, which Nikola Kalinic scored with a header in the 7th minute.

It took the Spaniards around 20 minutes to come back to the match; and it was Polish Grzegorz Krychowiak who put his side on an equal level with the Ukrainians on a low cross from inside the box.

Sevilla took the lead in the 31st minute when former Arsenal striker Jose Antonio Reyes found Carlos Bacca deep in Dnipro’s defense. Bacca made it 2-1 for the Spanish side after dribbling the keeper.

But things were meant to get leveled again in the first half and Dnipro’s captain Ruslan Rotan sent a curling free kick from 25 yards out into the back of the net with 2 minutes remaining to halftime to make it 2-2. It was the first time Dnipro scored more than one goal during a match after scoring only once in 6 of its previous Europa League fixtures.

However, this was as far as the Ukrainians could go. Colombian Bacca completed his brace in a one on one with the goalie in the 72nd minute.

No more goals were scored and Sevilla won the final 3-2. The victory also placed the team in next year’s UEFA Champions League group stages automatically.
