The Republican National Committee has lashed out at Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over the equal pay issue, saying the former New York senator “will say anything to benefit herself politically.”

“Hillary Clinton has a habit of contradicting pro-women words with anti-women actions," said Allison Moore, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee.

"Clinton now claims to care about equal pay, yet paid women significantly less than men in her own Senate office. The reality is that Hillary Clinton will say anything to benefit herself politically,” she added.

The criticism was made after Clinton mocked her Republican presidential contenders over the equal pay issue for men and women.

"What century are they living in?" Clinton said during a speech at the Democratic Women's Caucus in Columbia, South Carolina on Wednesday.

"This is not a women’s issue. This is a family issue and an American economic issue," the former secretary of state said. "I want to get up every single day going to work for you, standing up for you, making a difference for you."

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker called equal pay a "bogus" issue.

Senator Marco Rubio also said Congress was "wasting time" on the matter.

Clinton officially launched a campaign to secure the Democratic nomination for the 2016 presidential election, seven years after a defeat to President Barack Obama.

The former first lady was the secretary of state during Obama’s first term and his primary opponent before that in the 2008 presidential election.
