The ISIL Takfiri group has executed as many as 20 people in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra in the central province of Homs.

According to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Wednesday, the Takfiri group executed the local people in a Roman amphitheater in the ancient city by shooting at them.

The civilians were reportedly accused of being loyal to the Syrian government.

The UK-based group also said that the Takfiri terrorists “called people to watch” the execution in the city, which is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site.

“ISIL gathered a lot of people there on purpose, to show their force on the ground,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the group.

On Sunday, the observatory reported the execution of at least 67 civilians, including children, and 150 members of the Syrian army all happened since the terrorist group captured the city a week ago.

Syrian media outlets, however, say that since the terrorists seized the city, they have killed more than 400 civilians, mostly women and children.

On May 21, Federica Mogherini, the European Union's foreign policy chief, warned about the possible war crimes that the terrorist group might commit in Palmyra.

Thousands of people “risk to be exposed to arbitrary violent actions and more destructions of cultural sites might be perpetrated,” Mogherini said.

The terrorist group’s “mass killings and deliberate destruction of archaeological and cultural heritage in Syria and Iraq amount to a war crime according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court,” she said.

According to Syrian military sources, the army has launched an operation against the terrorists on the outskirts of Palmyra and elsewhere in the province with the aim of recapturing the city and its three-millennia-old world heritage site from ISIL’s control.

A report by the Syrian state television said that more that 50 Takfiri militants were killed during the offensive.

Since March 2011, Syria has been beset by a deadly crisis that has reportedly claimed the lives of over 222,000 people.
