'Russia against automatic restoration of sanctions on Iran'
A senior Russian official has reiterated that Moscow is totally against any mechanism which allows the automatic restoration of sanctions on Iran in case of a violation of any final nuclear deal, saying the 'snap-back' of sanctions on the Islamic Republic can only come through a UN Security Council resolution.
“There should be nothing automatic in this sphere,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Wednesday, saying that the so-called snap-back of sanctions should only come through a UN-sponsored resolution.
“We should find a formula under which a decision on a hypothetical, possible, potential restoration of sanctions would be made only and solely by the UN Security Council through voting, through a resolution,” Ryabkov told the Russia-24 channel.
The high-ranking Russian diplomat, who has represented Moscow in numerous rounds of international talks on Iran’s nuclear program, expressed hope that a solution acceptable for all sides could be reached before the June 30 deadline by which Iran and the P5+1 countries are scheduled to ink a final nuclear deal.
“It is on this particular aspect that we see certain advancement. We expect that by the deadline set for the talks - June 30 - we will find a mutually-acceptable solution suiting everyone,” Ryabkov said.
Earlier in the day, a top Iranian nuclear negotiator reiterated Tehran’s stance regarding the removal of sanctions imposed on the country for its nuclear activities, saying the bans must be lifted simultaneously with the implementation of a comprehensive nuclear agreement between Iran and the group of six countries.
Abbas Araqchi, who is now in Vienna for talks with representatives of the six countries, said the two sides are working on a timetable to synchronize their undertakings after a final deal is clinched.
He said, however, that Iran would only accept an agreement whose details are “favorable” to Tehran.
The new round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group - the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany – are currently underway in the Austrian capital with negotiating teams holding back-to-back meetings to discuss the outstanding stumbling blocks to a final deal.
Iran and the P5+1 group reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Lausanne in April.
