UK man jailed for trying to join ISIL

A British man has been sentenced to jail for trying to join the militants in Syria.

UK authorities have sentenced a man to six years in prison for trying to join the Takfiri terrorists of ISIL in Syria.

Zakariya Ashiq, 20, from Coventry, was put on trial at the Old Bailey and found guilty of two counts of preparing acts of terrorism.

Ashiq was arrested at Heathrow Airport in November last year after failing to cross into Syria from Jordan.

He confessed trying to get to Syria but said he had been forced to leave the UK because he was being "harassed" by MI5.
