US sailor gets two years in prison for videotaping naked female officers

The Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Wyoming transits the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga.

A US Navy sailor has been sentenced to two years in a military prison for filming and sharing videos of some female officers undressing in the shower aboard the USS Wyoming nuclear submarine.

Charles Greaves was sentenced in a military court in Florida on Tuesday.

He is one of seven other sailors charged in connection with the case. Greaves, however, was the sole sailor charged with secretly making the videos.

"The accused has dehumanized these officers and made them objects, objects to be collected," said Navy prosecuting attorney Lee Marsh.

Greaves, a missile technician, and the female officers served aboard the submarine based at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia.

"This is a terrible thing to have done to anyone, especially fellow sailors," said Greaves. "I shamed myself and derailed my ambitions."

Four female officers testified against Greaves. They said their careers had been ruined or derailed by the videos.

"I broke down," one of the female officers said. "The people I was working next to, who I had immense faith and trust in ... were not anything that I thought they were."

"I questioned people if they've seen the video, and I couldn't trust anyone that they hadn't," she added.

All of the four female officers said they have had a difficult time escaping the incident.

The officers were among the first women to serve on Navy submarines in the Atlantic fleet. Some analysts say the incident should give women pause about seeking such jobs.

The USS Wyoming was one of the first submarines to allow female officers in 2011.
