Iraqi army, allied forces capture 100s of ISIL militants in Anbar
Iraqi army troops and allied forces have captured hundreds of ISIL militants in the western province of Anbar.
New video footage shows Iraqi security forces, backed by members of the allied Popular Mobilization units, having captured hundreds of Takfiri ISIL militants in the country’s conflict-ridden western province of Anbar.
The video, aired by the Lebanon-based Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news network on Wednesday, shows ISIL militants lined up in a desert area on the outskirts of the provincial capital city of Ramadi, located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad.
Al-Mayadeen added that the ISIL Takfiris were rounded up as Iraqi security forces and allied forces launched an operation from three directions on the strategic western Iraqi city.
The development came a day after Iraqi Prime Minister Heidar al-Abadi said “security forces have surrounded the Takfiri ISIL members,” pledging swift advances against the extremists.
Moreover, Iraqi troopers have engaged ISIL militants in al-Tash and al-Humayrah districts of Anbar, and managed to expel the Takfiris from both areas.
According to a statement released by the Iraqi Defense Ministry on Wednesday, scores of ISIL militants have also fled en masse from the town of al-Dujail, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of Baghdad, the village of Sayed Gharib as well as the districts of Kassarat and al-Ishaqi in Iraq’s northern province of Salahuddin.
Additionally, Iraqi special forces thwarted a bomb attack against the main university in the city of Fallujah, located roughly 69 kilometers (43 mi) west of Baghdad, on Wednesday.
Iraqi police officers stopped three vehicles rigged with explosives as they sought to enter the university premises.
The northern and western parts of Iraq have witnessed gruesome violence ever since Takfiri ISIL militants began their march through Iraqi territory in June 2014. Units of army soldiers and volunteer fighters have joined forces and are seeking to take back militant-held regions in joint operations.
