Three Pakistani police officers gunned down in Karachi
At least three Pakistani police officers are shot dead and another one is injured in a shooting attack by unknown assailants in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi.
The policemen were on duty in Karachi’s Azizabad area when four attackers on motorbikes sprayed bullets on their van early on Wednesday, and then managed to escape the scene.
Following the raid, security forces cordoned off the spot, and an investigation into the incident was launched.
No group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the raid.
Karachi, home to numerous ethnic groups with a population of around 18 million, has been hit by terrorist attacks as well as clashes between rival ethnic and political factions for the past two decades.
Pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan have carried out numerous attacks against security forces and civilians, and managed to spread their influence in various parts of the country.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Islamabad entered an alliance with Washington in the so-called war on terror.
More than 4,000 Pakistani police and soldiers have reportedly been killed so far and thousands more have been displaced in the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
