FBI investigating threatening letters sent to 2 Islamic centers in US
Two mosques in the US state of Arizona have received identical letters containing threats against Muslims there.
The letters were mailed to the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix and the Islamic Community Center of Tempe in the US state of Arizona over the weekend, reports said early on Wednesday.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations said it had one of its lawyer talk to an FBI agent over the issue.
According to FBI spokesman Anthony Farinacci, the agency was seeing into the information it received.
Usama Shami, president of the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix to whom the letter was addressed, said threatening letters were occasionally sent to the mosque but this one contained threats more violent in nature.
Kristy Sabbah, operations coordinator for the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Arizona chapter, announced the existence of the identical letter mailed to the Tempe mosque.
It was not immediately clear what the threats were but the letters started with reference to Texas shooting suspects Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, who reportedly used to go the Phoenix mosque at some point in their lives.
The two gunmen attacked a contest for physical depictions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Garland, Texas, early May.
The two had apparently stopped going to the mosque for prayer before the attack, which claimed their lives.
Shami voiced regret over why the mosque was being targeted while it did not promote violence of any kind.
“We are not educating people to do violent acts, so why are we being held responsible in the minds of some people?” he said.
