Iranian university students have developed a new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that can be used for reconnaissance missions.

The aircraft, named Tarlan (Northern Goshawk) was developed by Iranian students at the Science and Research Branch of the Islamic Azad University, is made of composite materials.

The UAV, which can perform a wide variety of functions, including border patrol, forest and road traffic monitoring, pipeline monitoring as well as conducting geophysical surveys, has a wingspan of three meters (9.8 feet) and a hull length of 1.9 meters (6.2 feet).

The drone has a flight endurance of 120 minutes plus a maximum height of 3,000 meters (9,842 feet) above the ground, and is capable of carrying a payload of two kilograms.

On November 18, 2013, Iran unveiled its biggest domestically developed drone, which can be used for reconnaissance and combat operations.

The remote-controlled aircraft, dubbed Fotros, has an operational radius of up to 2,000 kilometers, an operational altitude of 25,000 feet and flight endurance of up to 30 hours.

The Fotros drone can be used for reconnaissance and surveillance, and has the potential to carry out combat operations once armed with air-to-surface missiles and other types of rockets.
