US police officer fatally shot in New Mexico

The shooting happened after 8 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Esther Bone Memorial Library in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

An American police officer in Rio Rancho, New Mexico has been shot and killed and the suspect is at large, according to police officials.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Esther Bone Memorial Library on Monday and the suspect managed to flee the scene.

“Obviously anyone that would shoot a police officer is an inherit danger to the rest of the community and we want to take that person out of the community and incarcerate them so they aren’t a danger to anyone else,” said Cpt. Paul Rogers, a spokesman with the Rio Rancho Police Department.

The officer was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to a witness, four gunshots could be heard coming from the parking lot directly in front of library.

“Twenty seconds later I hear, pop, pop, pop, pop. Four shots, and I come around this corner. I don't see anyone. Then I look forward, and he's giving him CPR,” the witness said.

Police did not release the identity of the officer or what he was doing in the parking lot.

The shooting was the first of its type in which an officer with the force has ever been shot in line of duty since the force was first formed in 1981.

The incident came just hours after the body of another police officer was found dead next to railroad tracks in Washington.

The body of 43-year-old Dane Reister, who was fired from Portland police in October 2013 over criminal charges for a 2011 shooting, was found near Sixth Street on the south side of the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks.

A report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that over 11,000 people are murdered with a firearm each year in the US, and more than 20,000 others commit suicide using shotguns.
