A policeman has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting a mentally handicapped girl at a Cairo police station, a court official said.

The incident happened in August 2014 at the Imbaba police station in the capital Cairo where the policeman sexually assaulted the 16-year old girl.

In order to avoid being filmed on a CCTV installed inside the cell, the policeman took the victim out of the cell and sexually assaulted her.

A judicial official told AFP that the victim had been detained for unclear reasons.

However, according to a report by Egyptian daily newspaper al-Ahram, the victim, who the report said was 17, had been taken in for not carrying a national identification card.

The court sentenced the man, identified as Khaled Abdel-Rahman Mohamed, to life in jail, which in Egypt amounts to about 25 years behind bars.

In January, two Egyptian policemen were detained and referred to a court in Cairo for abducting and sexually assaulting a young woman in their patrol car.

The policemen face life imprisonment if convicted, according to judicial experts.

In June 2014, Egypt withdrew the licenses of two hotels in a popular Red Sea resort over reported sexual assaults by policemen and security guards. A prosecutor referred a policeman to trial for allegedly entering the hotel room of a Russian tourist and attempting to rape her.

Many prisoners in Egypt have recently spoken of sexual harassment by security forces in jails as well as threats of rape.

The government has categorically denied such abuses and violations taking place in prisons, saying that isolated incidents are investigated and dealt with.
