Landslide in Kyrgyzstan kills six, injured 12
At least six people have been killed in a landslide in the central Asian republic of Kyrgystan, official reports say.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said three children were among those killed in Jalal-Abad Province.
At least 12 others have been also injured and transferred to the hospital.
According to officials, the landslide, which was triggered by heavy rain, buried five houses in the village of Suzak, located close to the border with neighboring Uzbekistan.
Kyrgyzstan’s President Almazbek Atambayev has vowed to pay the families of the victims USD 1,600 in compensation for their losses.
In April 2009, a similar landslide triggered by heavy rain, claimed the lives of 16 people in the region.
Landslides are common in Kyrgyzstan’s mostly mountainous Jala-Abad province.
