People in Poland are casting their ballots in the second round of the country’s presidential election as none of the candidates won a majority of the votes in the first round.

The vote on Sunday pitted incumbent President Bronislaw Komorowski from the center-right Civic Platform Party against Andrzej Duda, his major rival, from the right-wing Law and Justice Party.

Duda managed to secure 34.76 percent of the vote, while Komorowski gather 33.77 percent in the first round of the presidential race on May 10.

“The victory of one or the other will be a narrow one and is impossible to predict on the basis of polls,” said Stanislaw Mocek, a political scientist at the Polish Academy of Sciences.

During their electoral campaigns, the candidates vowed to maintain stability, security and peace in the region in case of winning the election, as tensions over the Ukrainian crisis have cooled relations between Moscow and Warsaw.

Under Poland’s parliamentary system, the government is run by the prime minister. However, the president’s position is far from being ceremonial as he heads the country’s armed forces and has the power to veto new laws.
