Iran advances in Asia women’s volleyball event despite defeat

Iran has cruised into the second round of the 18th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship despite a loss to host China.

Supported by home fans in the Tianjin Gym, 12-time champion China beat Iran 3-0 with a 25-15, 25-9, 25-12 victory to top the Pool A table.

Iran had already thrashed India in three straight sets and booked a place in the next round as it was announced the winner due to Fiji’s withdrawal from the tournament.

The volleyballers of Iran will play Vietnam and Japan on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Iran has previously been present in the Asian event, standing 12th in 2007, and finishing eighth in 2009, 2011 and 2013.

In the previous edition, host Thailand was crowned while Japan finished runner-up and South Korea took the third title.

The results of other Friday matches are Hong Kong 0 Chinese Taipei 3; Thailand 3 Sri Lanka 0;

Japan 3 Mongolia 0; Philippines 0 South Korea 3; and Australia 0 Kazakhstan 3.
