Sudanese protest against death sentence for Egypt's Morsi
Hundreds of Sudanese have rallied outside the office of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the capital, Khartoum, to denounce a death sentence handed down to Egypt’s ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
The protest was organized by several groups and political parties in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, on Friday, AFP reported.
On May 16, an Egyptian court sentenced Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, along with 105 other defendants to death for a mass prison break during the country’s 2011 revolution against long-time dictator, Hosni Mubarak.
Morsi, affiliated with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood movement, was elected as the country’s president in 2012 but was ousted only a year later in a military coup on July 3, 2013 by the then head of the armed forces, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the current president who then led an interim government that crushed massive pro-Morsi protests.
During the Friday demonstration in Khartoum, some 700 demonstrators marched on the UNDP office in the northeastern part of the capital city, from the nearby Grand Mosque after Friday prayers.
Another group of 500 people from the mosque of the nearby University of Khartoum, as well as tens of Egyptians living in Khartoum, joined the demonstration.
Condemning Morsi’s death sentence, the protesters chanted, “Down with military rule,” “Sisi is the agent of Israel,” and “Down with the tyrant’s rule,” and waved Egyptian flags and pictures of Morsi.
The police and security services were heavily watching over the protesters who dispersed peacefully after nearly an hour and a half.
Morsi’s sentence has drawn widespread criticism from different countries and rights groups.
Amnesty International has denounced the death penalty given to Morsi as “a charade based on null and void procedures.” The United Nations, the European Union and the United States have also censured the sentence.
The death sentence is to be referred to the Grand Mufti, Egypt’s highest religious authority, for consultative review, and the final decision will be pronounced on June 2. The Grand Mufti’s verdict is non-binding on the court.
