The Golden State Warriors have narrowly won game two of the NBA Western Conference finals 99-98 at home against the Houston Rockets.
The Warriors had taken the first game of the series 110-106 and were hoping for a second consecutive victory as the Rockets were determined to pull things even.
The hosts were the better side in the first quarter with 36 points against Houston’s 28. Australian Andrew Bogut was outstanding for Golden State in the frame. He slammed down a pass by Stephen Curry to give his side the lead and later blocked James Harden’s layup after he had turned the ball over. Bogut finished with 14 points.
But the big scorers on Thursday were Curry with 33 points for the Warriors and Harden with 38 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists, all to no avail for the Rockets.
It was a closely fought battle in the second quarter and the two sides headed to the locker room with the game tied at 55.
Harden gave Houston the lead soon after the break which they could not keep. The Warriors had the third frame 22-20 and led 77-75 when it finished.
Golden State had reached 98 points with about a minute and a half remaining in the game when the Rockets went on an 8-1 run which brought them no closer than 99-98 when the buzzer went.
The Rockets now trail 2-0 in the series with game 3 to be held in Houston on May 24.
The fans hope that Houston will come back to business as they made up for a 3-1 hole against the Los Angeles Clippers in the semifinals.
