US allies not excluded from spying program: Analyst

The US National Security Agency says it will begin winding down its bulk surveillance program against Americans this weekend.

An American activist says the NSA surveillance program is not confined to the United States borders, but several countries, including US allies, have been targeted.

The US National Security Agency's illegal surveillance is “not just within US borders,” Solomon Comissiong told Press TV on Thursday.

“We know that the US government has been spying upon even those who it calls allies,” said the author and social activist.

“Looking at Germany, looking at Brazil and these countries, their (US) dragnet of illegal surveillance is not just within the 300-plus million citizens of the United States. It’s literally throughout the entire globe,” Comissiong said.

He made the remarks while commenting on a Justice Department statement which claimed a program will be launched over the weekend to wind down the NSA’s bulk surveillance program.

According to documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the agency has been collecting phone records of millions of Americans and foreign nationals as well as political leaders from around the world.

Snowden revealed information about US espionage activities targeting friendly countries and their leaders, which included German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

He began leaking classified intelligence documents in June 2013, revealing the extent of the NSA's spying activities.

Inside the US, Comissiong said, political activists and civil rights leaders have specifically been subjected to surveillance.
