Barca skipper Xavi to move to Qatar’s Al Sadd

Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez

The legendary midfielder of the Catalan club Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez, is to leave for the Qatari team Al Sadd at the end of this season, his father said on Tuesday.

Talking to radio Cope, the 35-year-old player's father Joaquin Hernandez said, "The moment has come for Xavi to say goodbye."

According to him, the deal with Al Sadd would allow Xavi to be a coach-cum-player signing.

The most decorated player of Barcelona met Al Sadd officials in March and the media announced that the Euro- and World Cup-winning Spaniard signed with the club.

Spanish media reported that Xavi announces the transfer in a news conference on Thursday.

Barcelona cited that it would not oppose Xavi’s departure although his contract will end next year.

The iconic playmaker is following in the footsteps of Real Madrid legend Raul who played 39 games for Al Sadd between 2012 and 2014 before joining the New York Cosmos in October 2014.

Barcelona lifted Spain’s league title on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.

Xavi has played for Barcelona in over 760 matches – more than any other player. He joined Barcelona in 1991, when he was 11.

The midfielder has also won three Champions League championships, two FIFA Club World Cups and the eight La Liga titles.
