US can no longer afford to be superpower: Madsen

Madsen says many more American are dying as a result of catastrophic infrastructure failure in the US.

The US cannot afford to be a superpower anymore because its massive military spending is causing the nation’s infrastructure to collapse resulting in the deaths of many more Americans, says investigative journalist Wayne Madsen.

He made the comments in an interview with Press TV on Monday when asked about remarks by former congressman Ron Paul who called the new US military spending plan a “recipe for disaster” that would destroy the country’s economy.

“Next year’s military spending plan keeps the US on track toward destruction of its economy at home while provoking new resentment over US interventionism overseas. It is a recipe for disaster,” Paul wrote in an article published on his website on Sunday.

“I certainly agree with Ron Paul,” Madsen said. “It’s absolutely true that we can no longer afford” this notion of being the world’s “superpower.”

“There comes with a terrible price to our nation’s collapsing infrastructure, we’re going to see many more train derailments because of aging rail lines and bridges and we’re going to see other infrastructure collapse with many more Americans dying as a result of catastrophic infrastructure failure,” he added.

On Friday, the House of Representatives passed a $612 billion annual military spending bill in a 269-151 vote.

The bill authorizes $523 billion in base Defense Department spending and $90 billion is included in the war fund, formally known as the Overseas Contingency Operations fund.

Madsen said, “We need to put more money in restoring our country’s industrial potential, restoring good-paying jobs, restoring social services to the elderly, the handicapped, the veterans many from past fanciful military operations abroad.”

“Americans need to come home and forget about this world’s superpower nonsense. The world is changing. There are new regional alliances being formed. we need to come home take of our own domestic needs and protect our own borders and leave the security of Syria and North Africa and East Timor and Ukraine and all these other places, leave that to the regional powers, we can’t afford it anymore, we need to come to our senses,” Madsen concluded.
