Iran defense minister in Iraq for talks

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan has arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, for talks with the country’s senior officials.

Heading a high-ranking defense delegation, the Iranian defense chief arrived in Baghdad on Monday and was welcomed by Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Armed Forces General Babak Zebari.

Dehqan is in Iraq at the invitation of his Iraqi counterpart Khalid al-Obeidi to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues with the country’s high-ranking authorities.

Besides talks with al-Obeidi, Dehqan is also scheduled to sit down with Iraqi President Fuad Masum, Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi, Interior Minister Mohammed Salem al-Ghabban, Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Ja’afari , head of Parliament's National Security and Defense Committee Hakem al-Zameli and several other political figures.

Expansion of defense-security cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad as well as reviewing ways to launch a joint campaign against terrorism are among the objectives of Dehqan’s visit to Iraq.

Earlier on December 29, 2014, Al-Obeidi paid a visit to Tehran and called for Iran’s cooperation in countering terrorism and corruption as well as the reconstruction of the war-torn country.

Dehqan told his Iraqi counterpart that Iran’s support for the Iraqi armed forces is part of the Islamic Republic’s defense and security strategies

Iraq has witnessed a surge in violence since the ISIL Takfiri group started its campaign of terror in the Arab nation in early June 2014.

Iran has repeatedly stressed that it will not interfere militarily in Iraq and Syria, but that it will continue to provide support for both countries against ISIL in the form of defense consultation and humanitarian aid.
