Iran allows no inspection of military sites: MP
A senior member of Iran’s Majlis (Parliament) says no one will be allowed to inspect Iran’s military sites.
An exception must be made for the inspection of military sites as part of the implementation of the Additional Protocol to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in the event of a potential final deal between Iran and the P5+1 countries, Chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi told reporters on Sunday.
He added, however, that Majlis must first approve the Additional Protocol.
His remarks came after International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano on Tuesday claimed that a nuclear agreement being worked on by Iran and the P5+1 countries would give the agency’s experts the right to push for access to Iranian military sites.
He said Iran specifically agreed to implement the IAEA’s Additional Protocol when it reached a mutual understanding with six global powers in Switzerland in April.
Boroujerdi further noted that any nuclear deal with the P5+1 countries must safeguard Iranian nation’s interests regardless of whether the deal is reached by a June 30 deadline or later.
“If we do not meet this time frame, the deadline for writing the text of a [final] agreement will be extended,” the Iranian lawmaker added.
He warned that in case of any violation of a mutual understanding reached between Iran and the six global powers in Switzerland in April, Tehran reserves the right to reciprocate.
Iran and the P5+1 countries - the US, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia – have been negotiating to reach a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s civilian nuclear activities, and have set June 30 as the deadline for the conclusion of the deal.
