Murphy to resign in June

Jim Murphy resigns as leader of the Scottish Labour party.

Leader of Scottish Labour party Jim Murphy says he is going to resign next month.

Addressing a press conference, he said will stand down at the next meeting of the Scottish Labour party executive. During his speech, he said Scotland needs a "strong and united" Labour party.

Murphy said he will table his resignation as Scottish Labour leader in June with a view to having a successor in place by the summer.

He was appointed leader in December after his predecessor Johann Lamont quit. Hewas one of 40 Scottish Labour MPs who lost their seats to the SNP in last week's general election, leaving Ian Murray as the party's only MP in Scotland.

He had attended at Scottish Labour's headquarters for crunch talks on his future as leader of the party.

The meeting in Glasgow cames after a series of calls for him to resign following the party's near wipeout in Scotland at the general election.
