Hawks beat Wizards 94-91, reach NBA Eastern Conference finals

Atlanta Hawks' Demarre Carroll under Washington Wizards’ basket in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on May 16, 2015.

A post buzzer three-pointer has been ruled out and the visiting Atlanta Hawks reached the Eastern Conference finals in the NBA after recording a 94-91 win over the Washington Wizards.

Fans at Washington’s Verizon Center were hoping that their side would level the semifinal series with the Hawks at 3 on Friday and the players tried to that effect when they had the first frame 20-19.

The Hawks, on the other hand, were after a first presence in the Conference’s finals and proved they did not want to let the chance slip when they outscored the home team 26-19. That meant the away side led 45-39 before going to the locker room at halftime.

Atlanta then made it a 14 point game in the third quarter when Jeff Teague made it 57-43 with a layup. But the hosts did not let the gap grow any larger in the rest of the period and fought back to reach 27 points in the quarter that was two more than the Hawks’ 25. Atlanta still led 72-64 before the final frame began.

The Wizards, who seemed to have found a fine form, continued with their attacks and reached to within 1 point behind the Hawks when Bradley Beal made it 87-86 with a slam dunk. The 21 year old shooting guard became a hero for Washington’s fans only seconds later when he gave his side an 88-87 lead with a jumper to put them in front for the first time since the second quarter. Beal had 29 points in the night.

With 6.4 seconds on the clock, Atlanta was leading 94-91 and Washington had the ball. Paul Pierce then drained a game-tying, buzzer beating 3-pointer. But when the officials watched the video replay, they ruled out Pierce’s 3, saying that he still had the ball when the clock read zero. Therefore, the 3-point advantage remained for the Hawks and they won the game to seal a 4-2 series victory.

Next up for Atlanta is a home game against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals which will be held on May 20th.
