US aims to target Syria, Iran and Russia from Persian Gulf: Analyst

The US plans to build a missile system called THAAD at its Arab allies’ request in the Persian Gulf.

A political analyst believes that a US “region-wide missile” system, asked by some Persian Gulf states to be built in the region, will be run by Washington that plans to aim it at “Syria, Iran and Russia.”

Gagnon made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Saturday when asked about a meeting between President Barack Obama and key leaders from the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council to craft an outline for US–PGCC partnership.

During the meeting held on Thursday at Camp David in Maryland, the attending parties agreed to increase cooperation within the PGCC and with the United States on ballistic missile system.

“What’s really going is that unrestrained US and Arab extremism in the region will continue and will even grow with the new technological space-directed twist,” Gagnon said, adding “the plan is to build a region-wide missile defense system using patriot missiles and what they call THAAD, which stands for Theater High Altitude Area Defense, and also missile-defense radars”.

“All of these missile dense systems then in the Persian Gulf region would be integrated and run through the US space system, military satellite system, it has to be, this is all space-directed, these (Persian) Gulf states don’t have that kind of space technology, so they would all have to be interoperable with the US system, which means that the US would be really in charge of it.”

“So in the end, the (Persian) Gulf states pay for the United States to build an expanded region-wide missile defense system” which “is really a misnomer, it’s really missile offence and it’s really being aimed at Syria, Iran and Russia,” he noted.

Gagnon, the coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space organization, also said “the United States is on the wrong side of history”.

The “corrupt [Persian] Gulf’s dictatorial monarchies” are the “essential allies of the United States now, helping to destabilize and create chaos in Syria, Ukraine, Yemen and beyond,” he added.

“This is the evidence of the desperation and the moral decay of the USA,” he opined.

On Thursday, Obama pledged America's commitment to back members of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council against Iran amid their concern over a possible nuclear deal with Tehran.

"I am reaffirming our ironclad commitment to the security of our (Persian) Gulf partners,” he told reporters.

The US would “deter and confront an external threat to any [P]GCC state's territorial integrity," Obama said.

PGCC member states are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
