Biden says US ‘expedites’ weapon shipments to Iraq

US Vice President Joe Biden

US Vice President Joe Biden has called Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to reaffirm that Washington is expediting weapons to the country.

"The vice president assured the prime minister of continued and expedited US security assistance to confront ISIL," a White House statement said on Friday.

The weapons included AT-4 shoulder-held rockets to counter vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices, as well as ammunition and other supplies for Iraqi forces.

"Both leaders agreed on the importance and urgency of mobilizing tribal fighters working in coordination with Iraqi security forces to counter ISIL and to ensure unity of effort among all of Iraq's communities," said the statement.

Biden also appreciated the prime minister “for his steadfast leadership in Iraq and for promoting national unity at a time of significant security challenges, including today's ISIL attack on Ramadi."

According to the statement, Biden reaffirmed "continued US support for the Iraqi government's ongoing efforts to defeat ISIL."

Biden made the phone call after reports said ISIL Takfiri terrorists seized Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, earlier on Friday.

Citing a US official, CNN also reported that the Ramadi situation "remains very fluid," and characterized the situation as "50/50," with Iraqi forces in control of much of the city center and the militants in the suburbs surrounding it.

The Iraqi premier denied reports that the Takfiri militants have completely taken control of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province.

He said the reality on the ground will become clear within the next few hours following the victory of security forces and residents of Anbar province.

While addressing the nation in a televised speech on Friday, he said the enemy will face a defeat once again.
