Two students have been shot while riding a school bus in the southeastern state of Florida.

The students, both female and not beyond the age of 14, were taken to the hospital immediately for their wounds.

Authorities later said the girls were in stable condition and that their injuries were not life threatening.

But it was not immediately clear who the culprits were and what motivated them for the attack. The suspect or suspects targeted a school bus that was taking the children home from school on an ordinary school day.

The two girls were shot at from outside the bus by possibly more than one assailant, authorities said.

A witness, who works close to where the incident took place, said a “guy just walked by and shot up the bus.”

Children, who witnessed the shooting, were in shock, according to their parents.

Marcus Grant told local media that his son was “upset right now to the point that he's talking crazy.”

Grant said that his son, along with other students, was being asked questions by police that were investigating the incident.

The victims were from three different alternative schools.

Alternative schools host students who have committed violations of school rules that vary from theft or damage at school to having alcohol, drugs or firearms on campus.

Such schools have been under fire in the past by parents who say the isolation of their kids from the rest of society is not a justified punishment.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 11,000 people are killed with a firearm each year in the United States, and more than 20,000 others commit suicide using one.

Gun-related casualties have turned into a “major public health problem” in the US, said a study published by eight US medical associations in February.
