Iran Foreign Ministry denounces deadly attack in Pakistan

The bus that was attacked as it was carrying Shia Muslims is parked at a hospital after an assault by gunmen in Karachi on May 13, 2015.

Iran denounces a terrorist attack in Pakistan’s seaport city of Karachi, which left more than 40 people dead.

On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham called the move “non-Islamic”.

Up to 45 people were killed and some 13 injured after six gunmen entered a bus carrying Shia pilgrims and opened fire near Safoora Chowk in the capital of Sindh province.

“Extremism and terrorism is inhumane and non-Islamic,” Afkham said.

No matter how or for what purpose, killing the “innocent” is “rejected and unjustified,” she added.

According to Sindh Police Inspector General Ghulam Haider Jamali, some 60 people were on board the bus when the attack was launched.

The armed men, who fled the scene, used 9mm pistols, he added.

According to Pakistani English-language newspaper Dawn, 25 men and 16 women have so far been confirmed dead by hospital sources.

"One young girl hid and survived. Three or four others who were brought to the hospital have survived..., the rest are all dead," said Rana M. Razzaq, a security coordinator at the Memon Medical Center.

Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan terrorist group (TTP) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to a witness, the attackers entered the bus from the rear minutes after its departure.

“They told the passengers to keep their head low. One of the attackers situated in the rear side of the bus then ordered his associates to ‘shoot every one’ after which they indiscriminately targeted all passengers of the bus,” a witness was quoted as saying.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also reacted to the incident “in the strongest possible terms,” calling on Islamabad "to take all necessary measures to bring to justice the perpetrators of this despicable act”.
