Iran's House of Cinema (IHC), the country's cineastes' film guild, has picked a well-known director as its new chief a year and a half after it was reopened after a state-ordered closure.

Reza Mirkarimi was elected as the new head of IHC based on his “professional and managerial records,” the body’s spokesman said Wednesday.

Atila Pesyani said the decision came after the needed consultations were made and Mirkarimi was "persuaded to accept the job."

Mir Karimi, a distinguished director with many international prizes for his films, served in the post between 2006 and 2008. He is known for films like Under The Moonlight, which won the best director award in the 2001 Tokyo International Film Festival. The film was also decorated in other events, including the Critics Week Grand Prize Cannes Film Festival the same year.

Mirkarimi’s election as IHC chief comes after the body was reopened in September 2013.

The House of Cinema was dissolved upon an order by Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in January 2012. The closure was believed to be politically-motivated.

An umbrella organization with more than 5,000 members, IHC is Iran’s largest film industry association which supervises various professional guilds. Its main duty, according to the law, is to safeguard the job security, financial interests and rights of its members.
