3 people injured in shooting near University of California

Three people were injured in a shooting attack near the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Three people have been shot and injured in a shooting incident near a university campus in the US western state of California, authorities say.

The shooting happened in an armed robbery in the community of Isla Vista, near the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara on Monday at about 7 p.m.

The three injured men, including one that is believed to be the suspect, have been taken to a hospital in the community of Isla Vista, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said.

Officers were responding to a report of "domestic disturbance" when they found the three injured, who are in their twenties, police added.

Officers are searching for another suspect, who has fled the scene with his car, that’s “possibly a white sedan,” the sheriff’s office said.

The police had asked students to take shelter as the university was put under lockdown meaning that students were forced to stay inside the campus. However, the lockdown was lifted several hours after the incident.

Just a year ago in the same area, 22-year-old Elliot Rodger went on a killing spree, stabbing three college students to death in his apartment before shooting dead three more students.

He took his own life after the rampage that left 13 other people injured.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 11,000 people are killed with a firearm each year in the United States, and more than 20,000 others commit suicide using one.

Gun-related casualties have turned into a “major public health problem” in the US, said a study published by eight US medical associations in February.
