Fugitive Chinese official wanted for corruption repatriated
A suspect wanted in a corruption case in China has been repatriated from Singapore as Beijing intensifies its campaign on fugitive officials accused of involvement in embezzlement cases.
China’s official Xinhua news agency reported Saturday that Li Huabo, a former financial official in the central province of Jiangxi, was repatriated from Singapore.
Li, who is accused of embezzling 94 million yuan (15.4 million US dollars), had fled China in January 2011.
He served 15 months in a prison in Singapore in an unrelated case and was then repatriated to China, the Xinhua report said.
The report added that the repatriation came despite the fact that China and Singapore have no extradition treaty.
Photos of Li were later published on the website of the Communist Party’s corruption watchdog, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), showing him marching down the stairs of an airplane while two police officers held his arms.
Li’s forceful return to China was in line with an ongoing campaign by the government to track down fugitives suspected of corruption.
The “Sky Net,” as the initiative is called, was launched nearly two years ago by President Xi Jinping in a bid to make the government officials more accountable and transparent in their financial transactions.
In April, Interpol’s National Central Bureau of China released a list of 100 people wanted by Beijing for corruption. China says those detailed on the list are only a minor fraction of the suspects, claiming that the government is determined in its fight against graft in administrative system.
Li was the second on the list, which includes notable former officials.
